Storage Virtualization refers to the process of completely abstracting logical storage from physical storage. The physical storage resources are agregated into storage pools, from which the logical storage is created. With storage virtualization, multiple independent storage devices, that may be scattered over a network, appear to be a single monolithic storage device, which can be managed centrally. Storage Virtualization is commonly used in SANs. |

Consolidation is a common trend in many IT environments, providing benefits such as improved hardware resource utilization, easier management, and lower costs. For storage, consolidation is accomplished by moving data off of direct attached storage (DAS) inside the server onto a shared pool of storage in a storage area network (SAN).

To derive maximal benefit from system virtualization, storage virtualization, as implemented in a SAN, is a necessary prerequisite. The mobility of a virtual machine (VM) and its data plays an important role in daily operational tasks from load balancing with VMotion™ and VMware Distributed Resource Manager (DRS) to system testing. The issues of availability and mobility really rise to the forefront in a disaster recovery scenario.

Microsoft Exchange Server has evolved into a critical application for many companies. Legacy storage infrastructures based on traditional direct-attached storage (DAS) are insufficient for meeting service level requirements associated with data availability, recoverability, manageability, and scalability. Leveraging an iSCSI-based storage network, Snapshot technology-based recovery mechanisms, and storage virtualization technologies provides an appropriate infrastructure for meeting the increasingly demanding requirements of Exchange - at a cost structure appropriate for Microsoft Windows environments.
